UNAM Bids emotional Farewell to Prof. Hangula
"We can refer to this era as UNAM's Golden Academic Era, which indeed is also Professor Hangula's lasting legacy, leaving behind the largest and leading University edifice in the history of Namibia's tertiary education" H.E Dr. Mbumba.
"The students from all the 12 campuses wish you good health and good rest"- SRC President
Out-going Vice Chancellor Professor Lazarus Hangula was at the receiving end of a heartfelt farewell ceremony from the University of Namibia (UNAM) earlier this week.
Prof. Hangula, who announced his plans to resign from the post earlier this year, was the centre of attention at a dinner hosted at Windhoek Country Club, in honour of his service towards the University's progression.
The dinner was littered with notable dignitaries, members from UNAM's governance board, as well as representatives from the Student Council, including H.E. Dr. Hifikepunye Pohamba, former President of the Republic of Namibia and former UNAM Chancellor, and Pro Vice Chancellor for Research Innovation and Development and Incoming UNAM Vice Chancellor, Professor Kenneth Matengu.
Addressing the modest crowd, Prof. Matengu applauded Prof. Hangula for his "vision, support and encouragement" towards the staff and for being "the driving force" behind UNAM's expansion plans.
"…. you put yourself in the shoes of those parents who have to send their children from the rivers of the northeast, from the difficult terrain of the northwest and saved them from the excessively consumptive market forces of Windhoek", he said. "We thank you for your effort in making UNAM more accessible," added Prof. Matengu.
Prof. Lazarus Hangula has been the Vice Chancellor of the University of Namibia since 2004, when he took over from Peter Katjavivi. Prior to his appointment as Vice Chancellor, he served in various other roles at UNAM, including that of Pro Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs and Research.
