SHORT COURSE ON OFFER - Student Supervision in Research

The Centre for Professional Development, Teaching and Learning Improvement (CPDTLI) at the University of Namibia offers short courses that are driven by responsiveness to client needs, accessibility, flexibility and inclusivity, that are fit for purpose and value for money.

The objective of this course is to provide educators with the knowledge and skills of student’s supervision, including responsibilities and roles of supervisors and supervisees in research projects.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

Upon completion of this programme a student supervisor should be able to:
• Apply the concepts and models of student supervision in higher education.
• Analyse different supervisory styles in higher education.
• Evaluate the roles and the responsibilities of both supervisors and supervisees in the research supervision process.
• Demonstrate knowledge and skills in relation to supervision guidelines and types of feedback.
• Acquire skills to assist students in the search for relevant literature in identifying the key sources.
• Analyse the characteristics of a good supervisor.
• Develop and apply rubrics for assessing research projects, thesis and dissertation.

CONTENT:

• Concepts and models of student research supervision in Higher Education.
• Different supervisory styles in Higher Education.
• Roles and responsibilities of both supervisors and supervisees in the research supervision process.
• Supervision guidelines.
• Developing a supervisory plan for the supervisee(s).
• Monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of the supervisory plan.
• Guiding students in developing research proposal.
• Library Training on access to Electronic Information Resources.
• Professionalism, ethics and integrity in student supervision.
• The significance of adhering to research ethics.
• Rubrics for assessing research projects, theses and dissertations.
• Problems encountered in the supervision of students at Higher Education Institutions.
• Qualities of good and bad supervisors.
• Analysis of Critical Incidents in Research Supervision.
• Track records on supervisees’ performance and progress.
• Personal Improvement Plan on Student Supervision in Research.
