A UNESCO chair of Human Rights and Democracy was established in 1993 with the support of UNESCO. The chair is part of the University Twinning Network involving four Southern African and four European Universities. The late Professor Walter J. Kamba, the founding Dean of the Faculty of Law, was the first appointee to the chair. The second appointee was by Prof Manfred Hinz, who retained the chair until he retired in 2009. The current status of the UNESCO chair is vacant. The Human Rights Chair and the HRDC works hand-in-hand with other institutions locally and internationally to address human rights and democracy issues. UNESCO chair of Human Rights and Democracy.
